The Humane Society of the USA is trying to crack down on the amount of puppy mills in the united states, they say there are hundreds of puppy mills across the country. All of these dogs live in inhumane conditions, with cages on top of each other and forcing the dogs to breed excessively with no veterinary care. The puppies purchase online are not healthy as the website says due to being born in such unsanitary conditions. The website gives false information about their puppies and post deceiving pictures of their most healthy dogs. Be careful where you purchase a dog if you are in the market for one. Make sure you meet the breeders and the puppy before your purchase, that way you know the puppy is right for you and they were not born in a terrible puppy mill!

What is your view on using animals for scientific research?

Would you refuse to use modern medication as most usually have to go through animal clinical trials before they’re allowed for human treatment?

Vivisection is barbaric, disgusting and wrong, no excuses. Just like it’s wrong to experiment on children, people of color, disabled people or any human being without their consent, it’s also wrong to experiment on animals. One of the most common forms of vivisection performed are tests that involve shoving tubes with harmful chemical substances down animals throats, into their rectums, vaginas or into their eyes. Very little is gained from this so called ‘research’ and this is mostly done just to discover the effects of a certain company’s product, that even then can hardly be applied to humans. There are far better ways of doing this without the use of animals as test subjects. Animals are not ‘ours’ to use in any way, vivisection is non justifiable. Murder, torture, mutilation and rape is non justifiable.

Precisely what nightmaresforaweek said. If we wouldn’t use humans against their will, there is absolutely no justification for using animals since they cannot give consent. Their lives and their suffering are just as significant as ours. Most animal testing gives us completely unreliable results and there is little to no benefit from it. People may say that we wouldn’t know certain things if it hadn’t been for animal testing, and that may be true in certain cases — but then again, if we’d thrown all ethics out the window and kidnapped people and tested on them against their will, we might have had a cure for cancer by now. Any knowledge gained at the expense of ethics is disgusting and worthless. We might know a few more things because of the cruel things we’ve done to animals, but we’ve also completely depleted all of our character and made ourselves no better than sadistic tyrants by preying on those weaker than us for our own benefit. Bettering our own lives at the expense of other lives is morally indefensible. We can’t expect to develop and improve ourselves as a species if in doing so we are disregarding the well being of non-human animals and torturing and manipulating all others around us.

Urgent: Act Today To Stop Reid Park Zoo In Tucson From Separating Long-time Elephant Friends

Connie and Shaba have been together at the Reid Park Zoo in Tucson since 1982 when Connie was 15 and Shaba was just 2. They have been deeply bonded since the day they were first brought together. Now, after nearly 30 years, the zoo wants to separate them and send Connie away. Not only is this wrong, it contradicts what the public and the City were told by the Zoo about the new elephant exhibit – that it would be a new home for Connie and Shaba.

Now that the zoo has nearly completed construction of its multi-million dollar elephant display, Connie and Shaba’s close bond doesn’t seem to matter any longer. The zoo plans to send Asian elephant Connie to the San Diego Zoo. It will bring a group of African elephants (a bull and two females with calves) to the Reid Park Zoo from the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, and try to integrate Shaba with them. There is absolutely no guarantee that she will integrate with the group; if not, she would be moved to another zoo.

“Meet William and Harry. They are four week old dairy calf orphans. William and Harry have a very sad story, but are luckier than they can ever imagine. Two days ago we were presented with another such situation — two very heart-wrenching orphans who were in such critical shape that they would have been dead within 24 hours had we not intervened.

The dairy industry is one of mankind’s cruelest industries. Like humans, cows must bear young in order to produce milk; their gestation period mimics a human’s as they carry their babies for nine months. Millions of cows need to give birth everyday to satisfy our appetite for milk. So, what happens to all of those babies? The dairy farmers certainly cannot have the babies suckling the milk that was “meant for us humans”… so the babies are taken away from the moms at birth and they are placed into crates, one on top of the other, until they are four to eight weeks of age. At that time they are sold at auctions for sometimes less that one dollar per calf to the veal distributors. All of these calves are very weak, sickly, hypothermic and injured. They are tube fed by the auctioneers when they have time to get around to it, which barely keeps them alive until they are sold. More than half of them die of starvation and the elements before they reach auction. Once they are auctioned off, they are slaughtered within three days and are on dinner plates shortly after that.

William and Harry were rescued right off of the veal truck. Yes, they were on their way to a veal farm with almost 100 others in one truck alone where they would have met their fate. Something happened and in an instant, two tiny, orphaned calves had a change of destiny. With nowhere to go, we opened our doors and took them in. Our veterinarian told us that the odds were they would die overnight…

William, the whiter one, was so emaciated his ribs were protruding and the outline of his skull was easily seen. Harry, the blacker one, was so terrified when a human approached him his eyes would become huge and he would start shivering out of fear that would send him into shock. Both babies were critically hypothermic and their diarrhea, which is called scours, was so severe they could not retain any moisture in their bodies…

No matter whether you eat veal, consume dairy, are a vegetarian or a vegan, if you are simply human and looked into the eyes of these sad souls, you would agree that they deserve the same second chance as all of the other animals that come to us time and time again. (Personal note: after doing so and coming to this realization, you all better go vegan and stop supporting this horrendous industry. Crying about how bad it is and realizing they have a right to live does nothing if you don’t act on it.)

Interesting irony… one of the trucks that was seen in the auction vicinity filled with innocent calves and dairy cows for slaughter was the “Happy Cows California” truck. Talk about some misleading advertising! Teens Establish Link/Animal Abuse Hotline
In the September LINK‐Letter, we spotlighted students in the Center for Youth Leadership at Brien McMahon High School in Norwalk, CT, who are raising awareness about The Link. The students have gone one step farther and have launched a confidential hotline for Norwalk residents to report incidents of animal cruelty.
The hotline offers a confidential alternative to calling Animal Control, said Emily Todd, 17. “There has been a proven connection that people who are cruel to animals are more likely to abuse another person,”􀔛she said.􀔛”We hope this will get more people speaking out, and reporting these cases. People may be reluctant to call the police. Maybe they don’t have the best relationship with them, maybe they’re nervous. Maybe having a hotline run by teens will be more welcoming,” she added.
Todd said that she and her classmates will check the hotline’s messages and pass them along to Norwalk Police. The students have established a second hotline to help unpaid laborers collect on wages owed.
“These are great ideas, simply because they provide options that are not currently available,”􀔛said Bob Kocienda, the director of the group.

Link Bills We’re Watching
PET PROTECTION ORDERS:

NEW JERSEY – A1633/S540, which would allow judges to include pets in domestic violence protection orders, has passed both the Assembly and Senate Judiciary Committees.

MASSACHUSETTS ‐ S682, which would include pets in protection orders, has been referred to the Joint Committee on the Judiciary. State Rep. Cory Atkins has also introduced Budget Amend‐ment 753 into debate. The measures would enable judges to order an alleged abuser to “refrain from abusing, threatening, taking, interfering with, transferring, encumbering, concealing, harming, or otherwise disposing of the animal.”

OHIO ‐ H25, which would include animals in domestic violence and anti‐stalking protection orders, passed the House on June 21 and has gone to the Senate Judiciary/Criminal Justice Committee. The bill would also increase penalties for animal cruelty, and include provisions for psychological assessment and counseling for animal abusers.

OFFENDER REGISTRIES: Several bills have been introduced that would include individuals convicted of animal cruelty in registries or databases:

PENNSYLVANIA ‐ Two bills address animal abuse offender registries. H354 would require felony offenders to register with the county sheriff within 10 days of residence and annually thereafter for 15 years. Failure to register would be a Class 3 felony. The sheriff would be responsible for notifying every residence, business, school and animal shelter within a half‐mile radius. The State Police would maintain a central registry. S921 is more comprehensive and also addresses illegal use of registry database information; registration would be required for misdemeanor as well as felony offenders, and be required for 10 years. Registrants would pay a $50 fee.

NEW YORK ‐ A1766 would create a database of all animal cruelty and fighting crimes to be maintained in “a manner that facilitates analysis.” It would record names of all offenders convicted of cruelty or fighting, who pled guilty to another charge in satisfaction of the animal charge, or whose cruelty or fighting charges were not dismissed on the merits. The database would be available to law enforcement, prosecution, and humane officials. Two other bills – A299 and S2015 – would create an animal abuser registry of adults convicted of felony abuse in New York or other states. Abusers would register with county sheriffs within 10 days of residence and annually for 15 years thereafter. Failure to comply would be a Class E felony. Sheriffs would be responsible for notifying every residence, business, school and animal shelter within a half‐mile radius. The state Division of Criminal Justice Services would maintain the central registry.

$2Million Worth of Endangered Rhino Ivory Found and Taken at Hong Kong Border

Today the Hong Kong boarder seized over $2Million worth of Ivory from endangered Rhinos that was shipped from South Africa. There was 190 pounds of ivory making it the largest amount seized by Hong Kong. Along side 33 full horns from rhinos there was around 700 ivory chopsticks and 200 ivory bracelets. The officials say that this ivory was from 5 highly endangered rhino species. No one has been caught for this shipment and when/if they are they will receive a large fine and up to 7 years in prison.

What terrible and greedy people! They deserve much more of a punishment than that if they are still killing rhinos especially endangered rhinos for their ivory.

ALSO! WWF Says that in 2011 341 Rhinos have been killed already, which passes last years number of 333! Records also show in 2000-2005 ~ 36 rhinos were killed each year. So why has the amount of Rhinos being killed gone up by so much, isn’t there more awareness in the world about how terrible this is? Why do people value the ivory so much? There is so much harm on too may species in the world so why doesn’t anyone stop it? Society as a whole really has to rethink what we value because we cant just wipe out all the other species on the planet.

Ana Julia Torres kisses a lion at the Villa Lorena Shelter in Cali, western Colombia. Torres established the institution 17 years ago to rescue injured and mistreated animals.

We need more Ana’s in our world, she is doing great work to help many mistreated animals. She opened up her institution with no government help and provided food, shelter and care to the abused animals that came from:

• Show business such as circus animals

• Drug dealers and other powerful criminals who buy wild animals illegally to have them as displays of social status

• Uneducated people that for some naïve or ignorant reason think they can domesticate and pet a wild animal.

So few people in South America do something to help animals and because of that she has basically the only private animal sanctuary in South America. She has done so many great things for many animals. I want to be able to be like her one day
